Instrument
Finish—Painted
Chrome pans have a beautiful and much more finished appearance when compared
to painted pans. Both painted and chrome pans produce a similar overall
tone, but with leads and double seconds the tone of a chrome pan is almost
always superior. This is partly because after the chroming process, the
master tuner must retune the entire instrument and the more time spent
tuning, the better the tone. Chrome pans also have a brighter tone, due to
the fact that paint often restricts the vibration of higher notes on painted
pans and that causes a somewhat more "clunky" sound. Chrome pans cost a
little more due to the chroming process but sound and look better and
feature a very long lasting finish. However, for the lower instruments
(cellos, guitars, etc) the painted pan produces a more full and deep tone
that is usually a more desirable sound for those members of the pan
instrument family.
