Pans are available in a variety of ranges. Because there are many different instruments in the steel drum family, many people are faced with the decision as to which instrument to play. The most common is to start with the soprano or lead (also known as a tenor although it's not in the tenor range). It's more portable than the others because it is only one barrel (one drum). It plays the melody parts and is a little less costly than the other instruments even though it has the same number of notes. It has a range something like a trumpet, flute, or soprano sax. If you prefer the sound of a tenor sax or baritone sax to a soprano sax, or a trombone rather than a trumpet, you should consider a "double second" or "cello pan" instead of the lead or soprano pan. The double second is 2 barrels (2 drums) and has more capacity to play harmony while still being high pitched enough to be an effective melody instrument. The cello pan can be 3 or 4 barrels and has a lower warm sound most suited to harmony and counter-melody. VistaPan sells all of the instruments in the steel pan family, from basses and tenor basses, to guitars and cellos, double tenors, double seconds and lead pans.
